As part of its ongoing commitment to a closed-loop economy, leading waste management firm, Powerday, has been issued with a Certificate of Recycling for the year-to-date 2024 for the sustainability efforts it has made with protection materials business, Protec. The certification highlights the ongoing partnership between the two companies and underscores the success of their closed-loop recycling initiative, aimed at reducing waste and minimising environmental impact.
Since the start of 2024, the two companies combined have remanufactured 51,388 ProplexRE protection sheets, resulting in 37,000kg of waste material recycled, 196m3 diverted from landfill along with 130 tonnes of CO2 saved – the equivalent to preserving 6,475 trees.
The waste products are collected by Powerday, processed and returned to Protec to be reused in the manufacture of new products, keeping the materials in a continuous cycle and preserving natural resources by significantly reducing the need for virgin materials. As the products remain in circulation, closed-loop recycling also helps save space in landfills, lowers pollution by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimises the risk of harm to wildlife.
Patrick Rafferty, Environmental Sustainability & Compliance Advisor, Powerday commented: "The success of this initiative highlights what can be achieved through partnerships and innovation in waste management. By re-manufacturing over 51,000 protection sheets, Powerday and Protec have set a new standard for sustainability in the industry. As environmental concerns continue to grow, closed-loop systems will be crucial in driving the construction sector towards a more sustainable future."
